2.0 FURNACE DESCRIPTION

The complete atmosphere furnace consists of a refractory/fiber lined charge

throat and a (3) three zoned heating chamber, with charge loading table.

2.1  Charge Loading Area

A charge loading area of approximately 1O' of open belt is provided. Charging

of parts onto the belt is performed manually by the furnace operator or by a

loader provided by the customer.

2.2  Charge Throat Section

A fabricated steel charge throat section approx. 5'-0" long is located in

front of the (3) three zoned heating chamber. This section is refractory (IFB)

lined with a fiber lined removable bung and a manually adjustable door to

minimize the charge slot according to the height of the parts. Two (2) raw

gas atmosphere pilots are located at this charge slot to ignite the 
escaping endothermic atmosphere gas. The incoming mesh belt is supported in

this section by driven rollers and the exiting belt is supported on non-driven

rollers.

2.3  Casing

The furnace casing is fabricated of 3/16" steel plates, continuous welded, and

suitably supported with structural steel members.

2.4  Insulation (2) Zoned Heating Chamber

2.5  Mesh Belt

A 48" wide 35-19 CB Alloy wire mesh conveyor belt is provided.

The belt will be supported on power driven rolls on 12" centers from the

charge throat section through the furnace to the return driven roll. The belt

will return in the furnace supported on non-powered rolls.

2.6  Rolls

The rolls in the furnace chamber will be made of 3 1/2" OD 1/4" wall

centrifugal cast tubing of type HK alloy (25 Ni, 20 Cr) mounted on heat

application ball bearings. The bearings will be mounted on cast fin-type, air

cooled adapters which in turn will be mounted on the furnace casing. 
The rolls will be driven from the mesh belt drive system.

2.8  Heating Systems

The (3) three zones of temperature control are provided with (7) seven radiant

tubes located above and below the hearth and (1) one "U" tube on the back

wall to provide for optimum heating uniformity.

Zone #1, heating zone is provided with (4) four Trident tubes (2 overtired and

2 underfired tubes).

Zone #2, soak zone is provided with (2) two trident tubes, (1 overtired and 1

underfired tube).

Zone# 3, soak zone is provided with (1) one trident overtired and (1) one "U"

tube on the back wall.

Each firing leg of the radiant tubes has an Eclipse Model 30 TFB THERM THIEF

hot air burner with spark-ignition. The exhaust leg of each tube has a

Surface Combustion recuperator. The exhaust leg elbows are internally

insulated to minimize radiation to the ambient area surrounding the furnace.

The radiant tubes are of gas tight construction and are gas tight welded to

the bulk head plate. 
This provides the capability of maintaining the atmosphere integrity necessary

for processing the work in the furnace chamber.

2.9  Temperature Control Equipment

The furnace control system includes the following instrumentation, all mounted

in a NEMA 12, cabinet.

(1) Allen Bradley Compact Logix PLC for control of temperature and carbon

(3) Honeywell DC 2500 Hi-Limit controllers for furnace and quench

(2) Duplex, Type K thermocouples  are mounted in the furnace roof to provide

temperature feedback to the PLC temperature controller and high limit

instruments for each zone. A duplex type K T/C also feeds the quench tank

temperature PLC monitor and high limit.

2.10  Furnace Atmosphere Equipment

A free standing nitrogen/methanol atmosphere panel is provided to manifold the

appropriate atmosphere gases and controls for each furnace zone.
